    Fichtner IT Consulting is assigned to develop an incident management system - BGI EnergyMapper - for 50Hertz. The basis for the map display is the visualization of all network-relevant objects such as power line sections, electricity poles, wind turbines and transformer substations. A lightning database is integrated into the application to report incoming real-time information concerning lightning strikes. The system processes these data and displays the information graphically on a map. This provides the possibility to precisely locate a current lightning strike and the affected power line section.
    In addition, an incident tracking module is developed to enable an animated display of the lightning strike‘s time flow in a “movie mode”. The visualization of the incident on the map together with the accurate allocation of the affected power line section enables the Transmission Control Center staff to instantly decide what to do and take appropriate actions based on the geographical facts. Thus, decisions are more reliable and the reaction time is minimized.

    The Authority contracted Fichtner IT Consulting to design and develop a lock management solution, including an electronic traffic log. The aim is to optimize waiting times at the locks and lock capacity utilization, and minimize overall boat travel time, for which purpose, among other things, an optimization algorithm and an interface to the automatic identification system (AIS) for ships are to be implemented.

    Further, the software solution ´´lock management system´´ will assist the shift supervisor during his day-to-day work, which at present is largely done manually. In a first step, the software solution shall find application as a pilot system on the River Danube at Regensburg Control Center, covering locks at Bad Abbach, Regensburg, Geisling and Straubing, as well as for the local operating control stations at Kachlet and Jochenstein. The services encompass designing the system as a whole and making it operationally ready through installation, customizing and integration of its components. Subsequently, the outcome of the pilot trials will find application at other German waterways.

Process-optimizing functions such as powerful multi-routing optimization, white-spot analysis and geocoding for address validation have been implemented especially for Fleurop AG and lead to a comfortable, card-based cockpit integrated in the SAP sales and distribution module for order processing and sales staff.

    The diverse visualization options with the BGI ThematicMapper provide effective added value for the sales and management processes of Fleurop AG.

    The network service division of the Upper Hesse public utility (OVAG) and ovag Netz AG are merging and expanding existing IT systems to create an integrated geographical and facility information system – GIS/BIS – and so streamline company operations. Alongside geographical network and facility documentation, the new GIS/BIS is to be used in particular for administering and updating technical data on equipment and installations. For maintenance scheduling and contract administration, the SAP modules PM (Plant Maintenance) and MRS (Multi-Resource Scheduling) are to be linked to this system. Other system applications at OVAG, like network calculation, CRM (Customer Relations Management) and real estate management are integrated via interfaces. For system introduction, the data from the superseded systems are merged and migrated to a central, open GIS/BIS database.

    For a master plan for water in Uganda, reliable and highly accurate topographical planning data (e.g. a digital terrain model – DTM - or contour lines, topography) based on stereoscopic satellite image data with a resolution of approx. 50 cm was used.

    The technological progress with regard to remote sensing and the constantly improving quality of satellite images have made it possible to use this data to create a highly accurate topographical planning basis. The specified satellite data meets the requirements for the accuracy of the project and is ideally suited for the creation of a topographical planning basis for implementation and planning.     To support its sales processes, WINGAS has implemented the AUREA CRM system.

    In this project, FIT made use of the jointly-created functional specifications from a previous project to implement the adaptation and integration with various backend systems and carried out the system introduction and legacy data migration. The particular challenge in this case was, together with WINGAS, to provide support on the functional side for a straightforward and system-focused implementation and definition of the standardized work processes and, on the technical side, to automate the processes. The technical solution was achieved in full with a modern architecture approach using BPMN. This way, the interaction between market communication, settlement, offer calculation, and sales tasks was designed to be transparent, traceable and flexible. The specific requirements of an energy provider company were achieved in full in AUREA CRM in the screens, the individual processes, and in the data structures. This also includes, for example, a CTI connection to simplify the daily work for the end user. As the central, easy-to-use user interface and data hub, the CRM has proven an excellent solution.

    RailNetEurope (RNE) commissioned Fichtner IT Consulting with the creation of a customer information portal (CIP) for freight transport corridors on the European rail network. The solution, which is arranged in multiple function packages, provides the national network operators from 18 European countries, depending on their specific requirements, with a trans-national, corridor-specific master data management in the areas of infrastructure, equipment, and development projects, and also for main key figures such as capacity and market development. The internet portal CIP serves to publish any information that must be issued in accordance with the EU Freight Regulation 913/2010. This enables railway companies in freight transport to obtain convenient, trans-national, and standardized information regarding characteristics along the corridors.

    Based on high-resolution stereoscopic satellite images in combination with terrestrial and bathymetric surveys, a topographical planning basis (digital terrain model DTM) was created for the Ministry of Energy and Water, Afghanistan.

    The technological progress with regard to remote sensing and the constantly improving quality of satellite images makes it possible, using this data, to create a highly accurate topographical planning basis for the Baghdara project. Georeferencing of the satellite data was carried out using terrestrial surveys (e.g. GCP).

    The goal of the project is the assessment of the current IT service delivery and the demand from the technical network areas, taking the strategic plans into account. The analysis of the IT-relevant Group structures and the IT systems including architectures, know-how distribution, costs, etc. was carried out by the core team. The analysis of the IT requirements was carried out together with the functional areas along the process chains to ensure that an accurate picture of the requirements could be obtained. The strategic specifications, including the trends and opportunities arising from digitization which were put together by FIT, were discussed and recorded with company management and IT management.

    Based on the analysis of the current situation, a comprehensive analysis was carried out and clearly formulated measures were derived from this. These measures include recommendations on the organizational integration of IT including the relevant IT service processes (ITIL), the alignment of the IT target landscape (architecture), and the necessary subsequent steps to make use of the efficiencies that have been determined.

The study includes a consideration of the underlying decentralized energy systems, of automation systems, of control and IT systems and their integration. These are compared with core business processes for operational management, for marketing and for expansion of the virtual power plant and the associated value-creation potential, and action recommendations are developed for short, medium, and long-term developments. Particular focus is placed on dealing with the highly dynamic situation and the uncertainties of current and foreseeable technical, economic and regulatory developments. In addition to medium and long-term aspects, the project focuses on the specific effects on current issues and their prompt practical implementation.

The main purpose of SAMBA is the input, archiving, evaluation and visualization of all the data required for the production of wastewater statements as well as central wastewater monitoring. At the client’s site, SAMBA software finds productive application for automatic compilation of a wastewater register to comply with Annex 22 of the Technical Instructions on Wastewater of the Federal German Pollution Control Law.

    Tendering is on the basis of specifications and a requirements portfolio drawn up by Fichtner IT Consulting. Alongside the client’s relevant obligatory service procedures in its network operating department, the specifications lay down general project and framework conditions together with specific IT requirements for implementing computer-aided order handling.

    A concept is under development for a crisis management system (CMS) for the client’s grid operation and maintenance division, provided with a link to its PSI fault-clearance management system. When this is triggered by the CMS in an emergency, pre-specified organizational and technical measures are taken and alerts are dispatched also to external locations. Concept design also considers the client’s organizational structure, by incorporating connections to the control and emergency response systems of other departments to support handling of major emergencies or crises throughout the company.

    The control and command functions of the PSI system are likewise extended to place in readiness the required automatic responses in emergency and crisis situations.

    Because of Uzbekenergo’s high technical losses of slightly below 20% and serious revenue collection problems of just below 75% of amounts billed for supplied electricity, measures must be taken to substantially improve the situation as soon as possible. The key objective is to set up an AEM (Automated Electricity Metering) program, comprising a state-of-the-art and country-wide system at all levels of the power grid down to the consumers.

    Fichtner analyzes the metering system and assesses advanced metering solutions. Financial and economic analyses are prepared for the AEM project, with an assessment of the environmental, legal and regulatory framework. A detailed project implementation plan is drawn up, including preparation of draft tender documents.

    To get started in working with the KPRO® software package, planning engineers from OOO EnergoFichtner, Russia, attend a five-day training course. KPRO® calculates thermodynamic cycle processes and has been developed by Fichtner and its subsidiary Fichtner IT Consulting.
    When licensing the software and for specific requirements, Fichtner conducts training courses for engineers that are tailored to clients’ needs. The course is made up of an introduction into working with the software followed by structuring and calculating various power plants types, like combined cycle, steam range and solar thermal. The course includes setting up client-specific configurations.

    With a supply territory of 850 km2 and interconnected grid of 3000 km, RWW is one of Germany’s biggest water utilities. To support maintenance and network planning, RWW has, since 1995, been using a network information system based on Intergraph software implemented by Fichtner IT Consulting. For Intergraph’s new standard product, G!NIUS, its source code has been transferred in collaboration with FIT and the software prepared. Following a preliminary study, FIT was entrusted with technical source code transfer, data migration and putting the system into operation. The state-of-the-art basic technology and open architecture of G!NIUS allows RWW to optimize support of its business processes.

The new system is intended to make all the basic project-related information available over the intranet in the form of a browser-based solution.

    SBB contracted Fichtner IT Consulting to prepare a study, on the basis of various preliminary investigations, on ensuring security of power supply by installing a 132 kV cable in the Gotthard Basis Tunnel. Following detailed analysis of these investigations and preparation of models by our consultants for technical analyses and studies, risks are assessed with the focus on conversion and extension of relevant systems and network sections. Combinations of failures in line with operational experience, aging assumptions and other external factors are taken as a basis. Then security of supply is assessed on the basis of risk classes, and supply/consumer structures evaluated with their impacts on cable availability or non-availability.

    The study concludes with risk analysis and recommendations for minimization of risks and their impacts.

    EnFile simulates the motion of road and rail-guided ve-hicles along a defined axis, for example aircraft, articulated buses, tractors with semi-trailers, luggage trailers, of any number. EnTuch is used for cal-culating clearance in tunnel and otherwise limited clearance profiles. It also supports track alignments in bored tunnels.

AdGIS supports the business processes of sales, logistics, marketing and business promotion showing the staff a task-specific display of poster sites, premises like rail stations and shopping malls, points of interest and bill posting routes on a street map, in front of aerial photographs, detail plans of premises or panorama maps of skiing regions. The solution is fully implemented in Java, is based on the open source Geotool component, uses OGC standards and is easily configurable.

    As a result of the Austrian gas resources policy act and the resulting changes in market regulation, NEMESYS I has to be extended and amended to meet the new requirements.     The objective of the study is the long-term, reliable, cost-effective and sustainable supply of energy, especially electricity, to the state of Afghanistan. The study looks in particular at renewable energy sources, energy efficiency approaches, load and demand-side management, and import/export options. The strategy that has been developed takes into account different temporal characteristics of demand curves and electricity generation from renewable energy sources, whereby in particular, the seasonal and daily course of electricity generation from hydropower displays structural effects. Transfer restrictions and extension options for the utility grid are taken into account in an integral approach as part of least cost planning. Various characteristics are structured through pre-analyses and mapped over the entire 21 years through high temporal resolution (hourly grid) of all relevant time periods. The scenario analysis looks at the weak points of the current system, possible developments in demand, and possible candidates for the extension of generation and transfer capacities of the utility grids. There is a strong emphasis on extensive sensitivity and risk analyses. Despite extremely uncertain framework conditions and a high degree of uncertainty in the forecast of influencing factors, a robust strategy could be derived. This contains optimum decision times and flexible adaptation in the future in accordance with the future development of influencing factors. Energy models and methods are based on MESSAGE (Model of Energy Supply Strategy Alternatives and their General Environmental impact), a general model for large energy systems that originated from developments at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Luxembourg.

    For stereoscopic photogrammetry, aerial image data was processed. With this aerial image data, reliable and highly accurate topographical planning data was created for a feasibility study for small-scale hydropower projects. The resulting digital terrain models and orthophotos form the basis of the planning study. The aerial images have a geometric resolution of approx. 20 cm and a multispectral radiometric resolution (RGB+IR). Compared to conventional measurement procedures, the use of photogrammetry based on aerial images saves both time and money.

By means of the dual network planning approach on the basis of the greenfield planning method, the ideal network under techno-economic aspects is developed from the existing system structure for two load development scenarios with its practicability confirmed by analysis. Then the options for the transition from the present to the target network are compared on the basis of their technical and economic characteristics. The detailed short-, medium- and long-term plans of action for implementation are worked out by Fichtner in consultation with the organization responsible for the system. Finally, the new schematic network analysis model that reflects the positional situation with its implementation stages is presented to the client.

    Vattenfall Europe Sales GmbH (VES) is currently using the software system ´´PowerPricer´´ which was developed in collaboration with Fichtner IT Consulting. The PowerPricer system is used by sales staff to calculate offers for major customers. The load curves, stock exchange information, and relevant internal information such as existing contracts are taken into account in the calculations. The PowerPricer is integrated via a customized EAI system (master database) into the VES software landscape and both technical and functional support is provided. Vattenfall Europe Information Service GmbH (VEIS) has been awarded the general contract for support of the VES IT systems. In ongoing operations, Fichtner IT Consulting provides the software support and handles further development of the PowerPricer.

    Fichtner prepares a master plan to promote energy efficiency in hotels, residential buildings, public buildings, etc. and to exploit renewable energies for long-term reduction of dependency on oil imports. Considered for power generation are, among others, wind energy, solar photovoltaics, biomass and energy from the sea as well as energy recovery from wastes through thermal treatment and extraction of landfill gas. Also investigated is the application of solar thermal energy for water heating. Fichtner conducts energy audits in buildings, prepares a survey about existing appliances equipment, proposes energy efficiency measures and advises on regulatory adjustments.
    Finally, obstacles to implementation are identified, environmental impacts and CDM potential are described together with a CDM program of activities, and a strategy is drawn up, including action on the political level, to realize the identified energy efficiency and renewable energy potentials.

    In close cooperation with FSG, Fichtner IT Consulting is formulating a functional detailed specification as a basis for the subsequent development of the system and is creating the accident damage database on the basis of Microsoft SQL Server and SharePoint. The solution integrates an energy management system developed by Fichtner, IT tools developed by third parties and existing tools applied by Energie AG and was customized based on developments in energy management. The system integrates the operational energy data pools of Energie AG and provides extensive functions for data analysis, forecasts and energy resources planning.

Considered is the whole scope of information processing and transmission, with measured data acquisition, control of network components and interconnections with near-process IT systems, plus tie-in of business management and communications with energy market players. Critical aspects are increasing decentralization and the interconnectedness of automation/SCADA with IT and communications systems. Added to the previous requirements of reliability and robustness of the entire system are increased demands for flexibility to cope with possible development of smart grids and managing the risks arising from this growing interconnectedness of ITC and automation systems, with cybersecurity playing an important role.

    The objectives of this project may be split between three levels. On the first level, policy-relevant stipulations are integrated into decisions on extension of the network infrastructure under municipal planning. On the second level, strategic issues for medium term extension planning of the network infrastructures of the municipal utility, Salzburg AG, are addressed. These provide the basis for decisions to be taken on the third level, which is asset management due to PAS-55. The general objective of all these decisions is to prepare an integrated future concept for 2025 for structural optimization of the mains-borne energy supplies of the City of Salzburg under consideration of urban planning, which is in effect a road map for energy policy.

With the components ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Network Analyst, Geoserver, for geodata processing visualization, as well as GAMS for the cost-optimized calculation of network capacity flows, sales and trade-related workflows at WIEH were significantly supported. In addition, specific interfaces were implemented for the integration of the network charge calculation and network charge costing. The application thus contributes to security of supply and optimized gas distribution.

    Digitization of services Fichtner IT Consulting GmbH has expanded the modern e-scooter offer stella sharing of Stadtwerke Stuttgart by an innovative voice control of the Stella app based on Amazon ALEXA.

    Stadtwerke Stuttgart and Fichtner IT Consulting are expanding their successful collaboration, such as the introduction of MS Dynamics 365 CRM, by developing innovative voice controls in order to search and reserve stella e-scooters. In addition to the intuitive language selection of a found scooter and the ability to reserve the found scooter, the correct scooter can also be determined by additional language queries. Thus, the battery level can be queried (range) and searched for a specific destination (address) to determine whether the desired goal can be achieved.
