    The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) is a higher federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Homeland Affairs (BMI). Fichtner IT Consulting successfully supported the BBR with developer workshops on integration of the Oracle APEX and browser-based geoinformation systems (WebGIS) technology areas. The developer workshops held covered in particular options for implementing (geographical) visualizations of Oracle APEX-based factual data by means of the OGC-compliant open source components OpenLayers, OpenStreetMap and GeoServer. In addition to an initial briefing in the context of the developer workshops, exemplary adaptations of the components were realized and contents about optimized layer / symbol definitions and geometry representations as well as their integration in the frontend were imparted.

    Stuttgart Airport (Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH (FSG)) is planning to refurbish its existing accident damage database. With the newly developed system, injuries to persons and damage to property that occur anywhere on the airport site will be recorded and processed using a workflow-based system and then archived audit-compliantly.

    In close cooperation with FSG, Fichtner IT Consulting is formulating a functional detailed specification as a basis for the subsequent development of the system and is creating the accident damage database on the basis of Microsoft SQL Server and SharePoint. The project scope also includes training, operation, and further development of the system.

    Close coordination between three waterways directorates is required for managing the canals between the Rhine, Weser, Elbe and Oder rivers. To facilitate this process in view of differences in natural conditions and user requirements, Fichtner IT Consulting AG developed a supra-regional IT information and communication platform using open standards, open-source components and web services. Ergonomics and intuitive ease of use are key criteria for guaranteeing the system’s successful day-to-day application.

    RailNetEurope (RNE) commissioned Fichtner IT Consulting with the creation of a customer information portal (CIP) for freight transport corridors on the European rail network. The solution, which is arranged in multiple function packages, provides the national network operators from 18 European countries, depending on their specific requirements, with a trans-national, corridor-specific master data management in the areas of infrastructure, equipment, and development projects, and also for main key figures such as capacity and market development. The internet portal CIP serves to publish any information that must be issued in accordance with the EU Freight Regulation 913/2010. This enables railway companies in freight transport to obtain convenient, trans-national, and standardized information regarding characteristics along the corridors.

    To support its sales processes, WINGAS has implemented the AUREA CRM system.

    In this project, FIT made use of the jointly-created functional specifications from a previous project to implement the adaptation and integration with various backend systems and carried out the system introduction and legacy data migration. The particular challenge in this case was, together with WINGAS, to provide support on the functional side for a straightforward and system-focused implementation and definition of the standardized work processes and, on the technical side, to automate the processes. The technical solution was achieved in full with a modern architecture approach using BPMN. This way, the interaction between market communication, settlement, offer calculation, and sales tasks was designed to be transparent, traceable and flexible. The specific requirements of an energy provider company were achieved in full in AUREA CRM in the screens, the individual processes, and in the data structures. This also includes, for example, a CTI connection to simplify the daily work for the end user. As the central, easy-to-use user interface and data hub, the CRM has proven an excellent solution.

Powerful analysis tools have been developed that allow easy and intuitive analysis of mass data from different information systems. The portfolio of the ISM is diversified and ranges from the creation of standard reports and dashboards to the geo-spatial visualization and the implementation of extensive individual analyzes of real-time or near-time data of track systems and train journeys. Among other things, the DB Netz AG achieves the following important goals: Valid data basis for economic decisions in the area of technology and maintenance, identification of weak points and potential for improvement, including delay and fault monitoring and early detection of negative trends or threshold value overruns.

    The client, as distribution network operator in North Germany, is having its operations particularly affected by the strong growth of installations falling under the renewable energy feed-in law on all grid levels. As part of a pilot smart grid project, Fichtner prepares a study for next generation power system management. Considered is the whole scope of information processing and transmission, with measured data acquisition, control of network components and interconnections with near-process IT systems, plus tie-in of business management and communications with energy market players. Critical aspects are increasing decentralization and the interconnectedness of automation/SCADA with IT and communications systems. Added to the previous requirements of reliability and robustness of the entire system are increased demands for flexibility to cope with possible development of smart grids and managing the risks arising from this growing interconnectedness of ITC and automation systems, with cybersecurity playing an important role.

    Vattenfall Europe Sales GmbH (VES) is currently using the software system ´´PowerPricer´´ which was developed in collaboration with Fichtner IT Consulting. The PowerPricer system is used by sales staff to calculate offers for major customers. The load curves, stock exchange information, and relevant internal information such as existing contracts are taken into account in the calculations. The PowerPricer is integrated via a customized EAI system (master database) into the VES software landscape and both technical and functional support is provided. Vattenfall Europe Information Service GmbH (VEIS) has been awarded the general contract for support of the VES IT systems. In ongoing operations, Fichtner IT Consulting provides the software support and handles further development of the PowerPricer.

    Fichtner supports the Government of Lao PDR in developing the hydropower planning and management capacity needed to ensure long-term sustainability of water resource management and the hydropower sector. The project background is rapidly growing domestic demand and dynamic electricity markets in and around Laos. Development of hydropower potentials has to be reconciled with water resource management requirements, ecological constraints and options for fossil-based power generation. Fichtner develops and applies a methodology for assessing avoided generation cost when purchasing power from BOT projects, develops and applies a least-cost power generation expansion model, and provides capacity building through training in the application of these planning tools and methods.

    The client intends to replace its existing network information system InterNETZ with the same manufacturer's recommended successor product G!NIUS (upgrade). The InterNETZ system itself and the necessary versions of the basic components and the underlying operating systems (Windows 2003 Server and WindowsXP) have become obsolete and the manufacturer now provides limited maintenance or none at all. In addition, the existing system can only be integrated into modern Internet technology at significant expense. For this reason, an upgrade is urgently recommended.
    For this upgrade, Fichtner IT Consulting AG is providing appropriate project-supporting services with regard to design, implementation, migration and project management. The software products for the network information system (NIS) are to be supplied and installed by Intergraph.

    On the basis of the BGI ThematicMapper (a geographical analysis and reporting tool), a GIS portal database for the visualization and analysis of national and international location and competitor data of the Metro AG is designed and developed. Bing Maps for Enterprise and Open Street Map serve as the map service.
    Due to the fact that a lot of data can be visualized on a single map, it is possible to quickly and easily perform location and competitor analyses. With built-in filters, detailed selections can be made. This simplifies the routine for obtaining informative results, leading to a reduction in working time and costs.

    APG|SGA is Switzerland`s leading out-door advertising enterprise. For geographical visualization of poster sites and publicity campaigns, FIT designed and implemented the AdGIS software solution. AdGIS supports the business processes of sales, logistics, marketing and business promotion showing the staff a task-specific display of poster sites, premises like rail stations and shopping malls, points of interest and bill posting routes on a street map, in front of aerial photographs, detail plans of premises or panorama maps of skiing regions. The solution is fully implemented in Java, is based on the open source Geotool component, uses OGC standards and is easily configurable.

    The Austrian Gas Grid Management AG (AGGM) ensures an uninterrupted gas supply within the transport network of Austria. With the realization of NEMESYS I, an integrated web portal was created that covers the AGGM work processes in various fields: contract management, capacity management, planning management, geo information, simulation, time series management and master data management.

    As a result of the Austrian gas resources policy act and the resulting changes in market regulation, NEMESYS I has to be extended and amended to meet the new requirements. In close cooperation with AGGM, Fichtner IT Consulting works out the functional specifications for NEMESYS II and performs the necessary adaptations to the ExpertGIS, WebGIS and simulation software products.

    Adaptation and extension of the EnFile and EnTuch software modules for application in Balfour Beatty’s project 'Terminal 5 Tunnels at London Heath-row Airport'. EnFile is a program for calculating towing curves and envelope surfaces of rail-guided and road vehicles with a check for collisions in three-dimensional space.
    EnFile simulates the motion of road and rail-guided ve-hicles along a defined axis, for example aircraft, articulated buses, tractors with semi-trailers, luggage trailers, of any number. EnTuch is used for cal-culating clearance in tunnel and otherwise limited clearance profiles. It also supports track alignments in bored tunnels.

    The client provides public transport in the City of Dresden. Its streetcar system has a total track length of 270 km, making it one of the biggest such networks in Germany, with over 700 switches. Ensuring a service that caters for around 400,000 passengers per day is based on innovative maintenance management.
    For this purpose, Fichtner IT Consulting implements a rule-based system for automated planning of maintenance tasks for servicing, cleaning and inspecting track switches. The database-backed system has now been in operation for several years and has decisively streamlined procedures for planning, carrying out and documenting maintenance. There are plans to link this system with SAP business management software for booking jobs and with mobile terminals for maintenance fitters.

This allows interested parties to navigate in a map of the rail system and directly call up pre-entered information on specific sections. This solution has been implemented in a database and makes consistent use of open standards. For the client, this innovative and easy-to-use application provides a high degree of security for the investment..

To fulfill this requirement, information on the infrastructure data of DB Netz AG (infrastructure register -> ISR) is visualized in maps in the intranet/Internet (ISR-View). To update the geometries of the displayed rail sections and to enter attributes, updating functions are also needed (ISR-Edit).

    Over the past fifteen years, the DfA fixed assets database has been used for construction, project planning and maintenance, and has been upgraded by continuous data input. This counts as the biggest GIS application in Switzerland and provides the strategic and operative basis for constructing SBB infrastructural facilities. Fichtner IT Consulting is responsible for loss-free data migration and targeted data upgrading for the new RGS 2 system. Complete, correct and high quality data migration safeguards data capital and permits a smooth transition.

    Due to new regulations issued by the Federal German Network Agency, routing under SNB conditions for rail network use was requested by DB Systel GmbH. To meet this requirement, FIT designs an integration-based solution. This routing library integrates GeoXtension into a WebGIS framework with visualization of all data for the compiled routes of an SNB map. For data compilation, a user interface is installed for routing parameters.

    SBB contracted Fichtner IT Consulting to prepare a study, on the basis of various preliminary investigations, on ensuring security of power supply by installing a 132 kV cable in the Gotthard Basis Tunnel. Following detailed analysis of these investigations and preparation of models by our consultants for technical analyses and studies, risks are assessed with the focus on conversion and extension of relevant systems and network sections. Combinations of failures in line with operational experience, aging assumptions and other external factors are taken as a basis. Then security of supply is assessed on the basis of risk classes, and supply/consumer structures evaluated with their impacts on cable availability or non-availability.

    The study concludes with risk analysis and recommendations for minimization of risks and their impacts.

These old systems are to be replaced on the basis of the IT guidelines applicable to the Hesse Road and Traffic Administration (HSVV). The purpose of PROCON, a project information and management system, is to administer for the duration of the project those data which are recorded and processed from the planning stage through to contract award. PROCON is intended as a tool which both facilitates work on the project and also processes the most important management information for project managers and chief officers. The new system is intended to make all the basic project-related information available over the intranet in the form of a browser-based solution.

    The goal of the project is the assessment of the current IT service delivery and the demand from the technical network areas, taking the strategic plans into account. The analysis of the IT-relevant Group structures and the IT systems including architectures, know-how distribution, costs, etc. was carried out by the core team. The analysis of the IT requirements was carried out together with the functional areas along the process chains to ensure that an accurate picture of the requirements could be obtained. The strategic specifications, including the trends and opportunities arising from digitization which were put together by FIT, were discussed and recorded with company management and IT management.

    Based on the analysis of the current situation, a comprehensive analysis was carried out and clearly formulated measures were derived from this. These measures include recommendations on the organizational integration of IT including the relevant IT service processes (ITIL), the alignment of the IT target landscape (architecture), and the necessary subsequent steps to make use of the efficiencies that have been determined.

    The Authority contracted Fichtner IT Consulting to design and develop a lock management solution, including an electronic traffic log. The aim is to optimize waiting times at the locks and lock capacity utilization, and minimize overall boat travel time, for which purpose, among other things, an optimization algorithm and an interface to the automatic identification system (AIS) for ships are to be implemented.

    Further, the software solution ´´lock management system´´ will assist the shift supervisor during his day-to-day work, which at present is largely done manually. In a first step, the software solution shall find application as a pilot system on the River Danube at Regensburg Control Center, covering locks at Bad Abbach, Regensburg, Geisling and Straubing, as well as for the local operating control stations at Kachlet and Jochenstein. The services encompass designing the system as a whole and making it operationally ready through installation, customizing and integration of its components. Subsequently, the outcome of the pilot trials will find application at other German waterways.

The basis for the map display is the visualization of all network-relevant objects such as power line sections, electricity poles, wind turbines and transformer substations. A lightning database is integrated into the application to report incoming real-time information concerning lightning strikes. The system processes these data and displays the information graphically on a map. This provides the possibility to precisely locate a current lightning strike and the affected power line section.
    In addition, an incident tracking module is developed to enable an animated display of the lightning strike‘s time flow in a “movie mode”. The visualization of the incident on the map together with the accurate allocation of the affected power line section enables the Transmission Control Center staff to instantly decide what to do and take appropriate actions based on the geographical facts. Thus, decisions are more reliable and the reaction time is minimized.
